Who is Sri Raghavendra Swami?

Question:
Recently I visited a house who happen to be my far relations and I saw a deity of Sri Ragevendra Swamiji. I did not asked them any questions at the time. I would like to use this forum to find out if Srila Prabhupada has mentioned anything about Sri Ragevendra Swamiji.

Regarding your question about Sri Raghavendra Swami, Srila Prabhupada does not mention him, but he is a bonafide acharya and saint of the Madhva sampradaya. Today he has become a popular guru in South India, but practically no one knows or cares what he actually taught. His true teachings are that we should all surrender completely to Krishna, as Sri Madhvacharya had taught before him. Their philosophy is based on nine "prameyas" or philosophical foundations, beginning with sri vishnu paratamam - "The vishnu-tattva is the supreme absolute truth."

Sri Raghavendra was the greatest author and preacher in the line of Madhva in the last 500 years. He wrote countless books establishing Krishna as the Absolute Truth. He gave special stress to the chanting of the names of Krishna, and in particular he recommended the chanting of the Hare Krishna maha-mantra.

While he was present in the world, he performed many miracles, including bringing the dead back to life. After completing his preaching work, he chose to enter "jiva-samadhi", where a saint is buried in his samadhi while still living. Before entering the samadhi he told his disciples he would live physically for 100 years, in his books for 300 years, and in his samadhi for 700 years. He ordered his disciples to place 1,008 shalagrama shilas on top of his head, and then cover him with dirt. Till this day Sri Raghavendra is still living within the samadhi in mantralaya. He has manifested himself to many people, including a British government officer who came to confiscate the ashram's lands. This instance was recorded by the British officer in the government gazette at the time.

The scriptures establish Sri Raghavendra as a partial incarnation of Bhakta Prahlada, the great devotee of Sri Narasimha Avatara. You will find in Raghavendra temples, the utsava murti (festival deity) is not of Raghavendra, but of Bhakta Prahlada. The main "deity" will be a replica of his samadhi (called a Brindavana) with dirt taken from the original samadhi in Mantralaya. In front of this will be a deity of Bhakta Prahlada. They treat the samadhi as the body of Sri Raghavendra and bathe, dress, and apply twelve tilaks to it just as we do to our body.

Devotees of Sri Raghavendra pray to him with the following mantra:

pujyaya raghavendraya
satyadharmarataya ca
bhajatam kalpavrikshaya
namatam kamadhenave

Sri Raghavendra is like a kalpa-vriksha (a desire fulfilling tree) for he always takes care of his devotees' spiritual needs.

well it is not so appropriate to reveal one's darshans.but when someone in right earnest seeks answer to a specific querry for further enlightnment, shastra says one may satisfy it without any harm to the seeker and the giver.i am traditionally a follower of adwaita school of adi shankaracharya.we do not understand the true concepts but follow blindly in general. when i was introduced to saint dnyaneshwara's commentary on the gita,i was influenced by his thought and loved to embress his philosophy of chidvilasa-a proximate to dwatadwaita i believe.all the acharyas have their own interpretation of the truth depending upon their pont of viewing the eternity and no one is in particular right or wrong. they are all like the branches of a gigantic bunyan tree which has spread all over india giving hope and shade to the people distaught by the sorrows of the mundane world.the roots of their individual theories are but one-the ultimate!---continued see next post.

ctd... i got the darshan of panch mukha hanuman to whom the swamigal is said to be devoted in his life. this was not with any specific intent as i was not seeking anything but i had this darshan followed by a beautiful darshan of hanumanta shining in golden light with the adri-mountain in his hand flying to (lanka).i regard this as a special favour of the swamigal sri raghavendra though i am not his traditional devotee.i am a hindu undogmatised and believe in worshipping the god in his varied and innumerable aspects equally.that is unity in our diverse cultural ethos.this is the sum and substance of the shrutis, smritis and puranas. this is the experience backed by the preachings and the revealations of saints like ramakrishna paramhansa, chaitanya mahaprabhu, kabir, dnyanesh wara aaaand so many others. the mind has to become all inclusive and not exclusive before it can be led to the pinnacle of the ultimate truth-god realization.

There are articles that we generally read over the internet and just move on skipping the feedback pages. But this article that I have just read makes me respond..."Respond with all my heart and share my views".
The philosophy of "Total Surrender to The Almighty" which I totally believe in has now been placed in an altitude higher in my heart, because I have come to know that this is what "The Swami" has also preached.
I must admit that many a time, I have really admonished the idea of visiting a local temple along with my family . But this article of yours and the description of "The Swami" makes me want to pay homage to that eternal soul which once walked the earth.. I wish all success to your service and wish that you continue your work of spreading Sri Ragavendra Theertars' message to one and all.

sri la prabhupada was a follower of the school of sri chatanya mahaprabhu- "achintya bhedabheda" which is a variation of the 'bhedabheda" school of bhaskaracharya and later day "dwaitadwaita" school propounded by nimbarkacharya.suffice it to say that these schools differ a lot in their theories from the pure "dwaiti" school of madhwa mata followed by sri raghavendra swamiji.
