Recently I saw a nice post by the devotees of Vishakhapatnam where they visited the sacred tirtha of Mahendra Giri where Lord Parashurama lives even till today. This sacred mountain is located in Odisha on the border with Andhra Pradesh, and is mentioned in every Purana and Itihasa.
In the last few days there have been many news reports of cracks appearing on roads and buildings at Joshimath near to Badrinath. Even the ancient Narasimha temple established by Adi Shankaracharya is said to be cracking.
Today we had the good fortune to go to Sri Marundeeswarar temple in Thiruvanmiyur. Valmiki, the author of Ramayana used to worship Lord Shiva here. In this spot Lord Shiva taught the science of herbal medicine to the great sage Agastya, so devotees come here to pray for being cured of various diseases.
Ma kichakeswari temple mentioned in the Mahabharata. It was destroyed completely to the ground by muslim invaders along with a number of other temples located together in the same temple complex. It lay in ruins for four hundred years and finally was rebuilt with pieces of the broken temples in the last century.
This is the amazing temple tank of the ancient Shiva Temple at Thiruvarur, location of the famous Tyagaraja Swamy deity which was brought from Indraloka by King Muchukunda. I have never seen a temple tank as large and beautiful as the one at Thiruvarur. Even though it is off the usual path of travel, anytime I go South I make an effort to visit this temple.
The water at Dhanushkodi is crystal clear, but the small waves are very forceful, and feel like you are being punched in the chest.
Veeratteswarar Temple at Tirukoilur is one of the eight Veeratta Sthalas, where Lord Shiva destroyed asuras. In this particular place Lord Shiva killed Andhakasura.
Avudaiyar Koil, also called as Thiruperunthurai, is a Shiva Temple located near Pudukkottai in South India. In this temple the great Shaivite saint, Manikkavasakar, was personally initiated by Lord Shiva. He became so intimately connected with Lord Shiva, that Lord Shiva instructed for this temple Manikkavasakar’s deity will be used instead of his own deity for all festivals and processions. So in this temple Manikkavasakar’s deity rides on Nandi around the temple in procession instead of Lord Shiva.
